Wiseman and the environment

At Wiseman we operate efficiently to minimise the amount of resource we require to collect, process and distribute our product.

Greater levels of efficiency result in higher levels of environmental sustainability.
Our approach is to have the right, sustainable resources in the correct places, to use those resources efficiently and to strive to continuously improve our environmental performance.

Bridgwater

Our latest dairy in Bridgwater, Somerset will be the most efficient and most environmentally advanced dairy in the world.

Amongst other features it has an effluent treatment plant which processes all waste water back to bathing standard. This water is then used to clean our vehicles and also to water the local cricket pitch!

Resources in the correct places

We have located our dairies near to the main milk producing regions in Great Britain and the main road networks, enabling us to minimise the number of food miles from farm to dairy.

LNG vehicles

Following successful trials, a number of Wiseman vehicles now run on liquid natural gas (LNG).

Initial results show that articulated vehicles running on a combination of LNG and diesel should reduce annual carbon emissions by around 11,500kgs per vehicle.

We have now converted an additional 20 vehicles to use LNG.

Energy

Robert Wiseman Dairies is the first dairy company in Britain to have all its facilities – including all dairies, distribution depots, vehicle maintenance garages and head office – certified to the ISO 14001 standard, with annual auditing ensuring compliance and continuous improvement.

We are continually striving to reduce our energy usage and this year we used 2.32% less electricity to produce every litre of milk than we did last year.

Zero waste to landfill

Following a successful pilot scheme at our Bellshill dairy, we have implemented a Zero Waste to Landfill policy across all of our sites. During the pilot scheme the proportion of waste being recycled rather than sent to landfill rose to 85%.
It is our policy now to find alternative routes for the 1500 tonnes of waste generated per annum, to ensure it can all be recycled.
